Speech Contest Info

Thanks to everyone who helped make our contest run smoothly, including our fantastic judges, parents, students, volunteers, and, of course, all of the coaches and students from all of the schools that attended.

Information for State Large Group Speech at Cedar Rapids Washington:

1.  Our school code number is #104 (9th) and #40(varsity).  The complete schedule is posted on the CR Washington School District website. Go to the Iowa High School Speech Association website: ihssa.org  and click on the CR Washington (Southeast state contest link).

2.  Listen to KGRN for any weather-related information.  Snow is forecast for this weekend. Please check our Twitter account  @grinnelltheatre and our Facebook page for weather related announcements as well as KGRN and WHO (radio & tv)  Speech contests are rarely cancelled.  If you do not hear any news – the contest is ON!! If the weather is bad at our departure time, we will plan to delay until it improves.

If the projected snowfall amounts occur, allow for extra time to arrive at school. Those who live outside of Grinnell, you may want to make arrangements to stay at a friend’s house in Grinnell Friday night so you won’t have to worry about your road being closed Saturday morning (if we go as planned or do a 2 hour delay).  People who live in Grinnell, talk to your out-of-town friends and invite them to stay the night, and still allow plenty of time to warm up that car, dig it out, and to drive slowly and carefully to school because even in town the streets can be in rough shape.  PLEASE REMEMBER: No contest is worth risking your life; so be smart and careful.

3.  The bus for the contest will load in the west (back) parking lot beginning at 4:45 am and will leave at 5:00 am.  It is a 90 minute drive to Cedar Rapids. We have a first-of-the-day One Act play at 8 am so cast members may travel to Southeast Polk HS for the district swim meet. Participants are not allowed to drive their own vehicles to the contest. We prefer to have all participants ride the bus and support the entire team.  You may take your child home with you after his/her performance, please check out with Mrs. Hansen or Mr. Hunter.

4.  Plan to arrive at the performance center a minimum of 60 minutes prior to the scheduled event time.  At the state level, there will be very few drops. Allow time to find a parking spot and to find the center. This is a large 4A high school. Maps should be available on the site. You will not be able to enter a performance area when the door is closed and the performance is in progress. Arrive early to avoid missing your child's performance.

5. A schedule of all GHS events can be downloaded here. We will have extra copies of our schedule at the contest site.

6.  No photos or video recording is allowed in the contest centers!  You may take lots of pictures – in the gym, hallway, etc - just NOT during performances!  Also – TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES IN ALL CONTEST CENTERS!!

7.  Not able to travel to Cedar Rapids? No problem!  All groups  will perform in the GHS auditorium on Saturday, February 11, 2012 beginning at 6:30 pm.  Cost is $5.00 per person or the bargain rate $12 for a family of four. This is the only fund-raising activity sponsored by Curtain Club (drama club).  Please come & show your support.

8.  Cedar Rapids Washington High School will have a donation boxes located on their information table at the school entrances.  The suggested donation for people attending the contest (not performers) is $5.00.  All of the money collected will remain in the host school to defray their custodial costs, etc. We have hosted 4 state contests and 4 district contests at GHS and know the funds collected at the door are vital to the program.

9.  The Iowa High School Speech Association requests that parents attending the contest not wear school logo apparel. We are identified by our code # in order to promote anonymity and provide an equal opportunity for all schools participating, from the smallest to the largest.

10.  Again this year! IHSSA has joined forces with Image Sports Shirts and Sellers to offer great t-shirts and sweatshirts with the names of the schools attending state contest. They will be $15 and $30 respectively. They will have a booth near the concessions area.

Thanks for supporting your child in GHS Large Group Speech this year!

We have a total of 72 kids performing on Saturday.  I know the kids appreciate it!
Thank you for your continued support of speech activities at Grinnell High School.
