Weekly Update: May 4, 2018

Happy Spring Day Friday!  The rain has moved away for a few days and the sun is shining.  We have had another busy week in the Grinnell-Newburg School District. Students have enjoyed many activities this week. A few that have been noted in this update are Y-Camp for Davis students, Middle School Choir Concerts, and College Selection day at the High School.

Please remember that Monday, May 7, 2018 is a PD day for staff.  Students will not be in attendance on Monday.

Kindergarten Round Up
Kindergarten Round Up will be held on Monday, May 7 for our incoming kindergarten students.  This is a chance for our students to meet the kindergarten teachers and get a glimpse of what kindergarten will be like!  Round up will be held at Bailey Park from 8:30 - 10:30. Parents are encouraged to attend a parent meeting from 8:30-8:50.

Admin Meeting
The administrative team has been working to refine our professional development activities for the 2018-19 school year.  Once we have finalized this document, we will share the information out to all staff.

End of Year Staff Celebrations
On June 1, all staff will attend our end of the year activity at the High School beginning at 1:30 p.m. Ice cream will be been donated by the GNEA for our culminating activity. We will begin our end of the year celebration at 2:00 to recognize our retiree’s, years of service, and a little reflection walk into the 2017-18 school year. I look forward to this celebration with all of you.

Decision Day
The High School Seniors had an opportunity to share their plans and commitments this past Wednesday.  The school is still talking about this spectacular event. Here are a few photos to share. The staff also joined in on all the fun!

Superintendents Meeting
The Central River’s AEA hosted the final superintendent’s meeting of the 2017-18 school year this past Wednesday.  A timeline for the new State Assessment was discussed. We do not have specific dates for when the training will begin for the new assessment as the vendor has not been selected yet.  I will keep you posted as soon as I learn more about the assessment selection.

One other highlight is that the AEA has copying services available for all staff over the summer months.  Please take a look at the Central Rivers Website for more information. It is my hope that we can take advantage of the cost savings for printing using this service.

Meet the Candidate Night:
I would like to thank all of our teachers, staff and parents who attended the meet and greet event at Bailey Park this past Wednesday night.  Josh Smith, recommended candidate for Bailey Park principal, had the opportunity to answer questions and get to know more about our school district and community.  We look forward to Josh joining our team!

Y-Camp!
Our 4th graders are having a great time at Y-Camp!  Look for more pictures next week!

Butterflies in Preschool!
There was a lot of excitement at preschool this week, as 5 chrysalises opened and now they have butterflies!!  The morning class was lucky enough to watch one shake and wiggle and finally open! Preschool teacher Andrea Zhorne was able to catch a video!

Mrs. Harris' Last Concert
It was a wonderful evening, as after 25 years of teaching fifth and sixth grade choir at Grinnell Middle School, Jill Harris directed her last performance with her students.  Their last song, "This is Why We Sing," portrayed the impact Mrs. Harris has had over the years. The students sang beautifully, great job by all, and congratulations Mrs. Harris on your retirement!
