Weekly Update: June 15, 2018
Dear Grinnell-Newburg Family and Friends,
Summer already seems to be going by so quickly as we are just getting underway. We have been working this week on finalizing back to school sessions with new staff members, enjoying the success of our summer athletic teams, and preparing for another neighborhood meeting regarding the 11th avenue property that will be held toward the end of this month. Please note that next week there will not be a weekly update posted as I will be out of the district and may have difficulty accessing internet that is timely for the update to be posted. Watch for the next update to come out on June 29, 2018. Please feel free to email me at janet.stutz@grinnell-k12.org and I will return a message as soon as possible.
School Offices
Many of our school offices will be closed beginning next week. Principals are in and out of their schools during the summer months. If you need immediate attention please contact your building principal via email or feel free to contact the district office at 236-2700 for immediate assistance. The District Office is open all summer from 8:00-3:30 Monday through Thursday and from 8:00-12:00 on Fridays.
Neighborhood Meeting - June 25, 2018
Our neighbors surrounding the 11 11th Avenue property will be invited to gather once again to talk about the proposed 11th avenue plan on June 25 beginning at 6:00 PM in at the Drake Library. Anyone from the community is invited to attend as well.
Baseball & Softball season are in full swing!
The softball team started the season at 4-2 but has run into hard times lately losing their last seven games. Although the recent skid has not fared well for the young Tigers, they continue to compete against some of the best softball schools across the state. Junior shortstop Megan Doty leads the team in hitting, batting a cool .400, while the mound work has been done by fellow freshman Hannah Behrens & Lydia Roudabush and 8th grader Meredith McKnight.
Tiger Baseball team started off hot and is currently ranked #7 in Class 3A. Their only losses have been to Dallas Center Grimes 6-5 in 10 innings and to future Iowa Hawkeye Baseball player Duncan Davitt and the 5th ranked in Class 5A Indianola Indians 5-0. The Tigers are lead by senior Ethan Mitchell (Upper Iowa commit) and junior Jayden Gibson (Western Illinois commit) both batting .463.
Summer Day Camp and School
Students and their AmeriCorps members enjoyed lunch together during the day on Wednesday. They are having a lot of fun in these programs.
