Weekly Update: September 14, 2018

Dear Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:

As many of you are aware the bond vote did not pass on Tuesday.  It is disheartening to learn these results after countless students, staff, parents, community members and friends put in an incredible amount of time to support our students.  I want to personally thank all of the volunteers for their time, commitment, and hard work.

Although we may feel discouraged, defeated, and somewhat in disbelief, it is apparent that we must go back to the drawing board to find a plan that our community will support.  Our next steps will be to first prioritize our system facilities needs and fix what we can with our SAVE dollars we have available. Second, we will move forward to re-engage our community to develop a new plan.  I know that many are disappointed. However, it is my belief that when a community sends a message like the results that were reported, we need to reflect and realize that sometimes failures open new doors to new ideas.  We will journey on a path toward a new beginning. Together Everyone Achieves More! Our TEAM will put on our thinking caps, collaborate with our community, and find a solution.

Our commitment will be to our students.   Our priorities will be to continue to care for our students, provide them excellent learning experiences, and celebrate them everyday.  Thank you for your dedication to our students, families, and community.

Board Meeting Update:

This past week the Board of Education recognized Carly Sis, Above and Beyond Recipient, for her work this past Summer as a participant in the Iowa STEM Teacher Externship.  Carly was selected to participate in this program from many educators who applied across Iowa. Congratulations Carly!

The board engaged in conversation with community members regarding the Bond. This discussion lead to our next steps. The Board will engage in a workshop session, (watch for date and time in next week’s update) to examine current facility needs and costs to share with the community.  Next, we will plan community engagement sessions to begin the process for a new plan. Dr. Stutz will also begin scheduling listening sessions with staff and students.
