Weekly Update: November 11th 2022

November 11th, 2022

Dear Grinnell Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:

Happy Friday! Today we honor our Veterans for their service to our country. Celebrations across our schools were held to honor our Veterans for their service and provided an opportunity for students and staff to honor and thank them for their service. Below are a few pictures highlighting the celebration.

Veterans Day at GMS:

This year's keynote speaker is James Kaup, a Navy veteran who is the father of a GMS 7th grader Lanie Kaup. The GMS choir and band have prepared celebration performances to honor our local Veterans. Students created pictures for their guests, and even Ash participated in the preparation!

GHS Choir Concert: Wow what an amazing concert! This past week the high school choir students teamed up with the sixth and seventh grade choirs to perform for a filled audience at GHS. It was spectacular!

School Board Reorganization Meeting:

This past week the school board held their reorganizational meeting. The School Board President is Dustin Smith, VP Stephen Sieck, Secretary and Treasurer Lisa Briggs. Tyler Harter has been selected to represent the District as the Delegate at the IASB conference next week.    The board also selected their committees with minimal changes. We look forward to collaborating and moving forward in the areas of policy, facilities, finance, and curriculum work.

The calendar committee will be getting together soon to revise next year's calendar. We typically approve this in January.

Jingle Bell Holiday:

We're just over a week away from Jingle Bell Holiday! Make plans to join us downtown next Friday, November 18 for all the holiday fun and to get a chance to see all the great gifts you can find in Grinnell this holiday season. A list of participating businesses can be found on our website or on the Jingle Bell Holiday Facebook event.

GHS Diving finishes 1st & 2nd place at Regional Diving Meet: Congratulations to our Tiger Divers, Trista Thompson and Camryn Russell. They will be competing at the State meet today at 3:00 PM. Go Tigers!!!

Quilt Presentation:

Amy Skousan’s students were at it once again preparing quilts for students in need. This year books and stuffed animals were included in the “Read to Lead” tote to be given to HeadStart students. We would like to thank all of the community members who supported this effort.

Virtual Backpack:

If you are looking for an opportunity to get your student connected in the community, be sure to check out the Virtual Backpack. There are a lot of new flyers on the backpack. Be sure to take a look!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Janet
