Weekly Update December 9th 2022

Weekly Update: December 9, 2022

Happy Friday! It is that time of year when the hustle and bustle of the season begins. I hope this weekly update finds you well and gearing up for a break and the close of 2022.

Illness in the School District:

The Grinnell Newburg School District has been experiencing a high absenteeism rate of around 10% in a few of our schools this past week. Please stay home if you are sick, monitor for illness, wash your hands often, and do not share items with students. We have our custodial crew engaged in extra sanitation and cleaning. The illnesses reported are not all respiratory-related. There is quite a variety of illnesses with various symptoms across the district.

Winter Concerts:

The Grinnell Middle School hosted two performance evenings to highlight band and choir this past week! I want to thank our families for attending the concerts this week! The students and staff put on an excellent performance. On Monday, December 12, the GHS performance begins at 7:30 PM!

Girls Wrestling Competes at Tipton Invitational

The varsity girls' wrestling team competed in the Tipton Invitational Monday night. The Tigers were led by Alyssa Kriegel, who won three matches by fall to finish second. Abbie Hatcher went 2-1 to finish fifth, and Ali Wood was 1-2 to finish sixth.

Build a Better Grinnell Survey:

Please, take some time to complete the Build a Better Grinnell 2030 Visioning Project community survey.

BABG is a research and community-driven assessment of Grinnell’s strengths, visions, and needs. t is a non-partisan effort to gather input and information from Grinnell residents, those who work in Grinnell or depend on it for key resources. The project is funded by a USDA Rural Placemaking Grant award and overseen by a 20+ person steering committee.

What are we asking - take the survey!

The community visions survey is a series of questions to help Grinnell put the pieces together!  t asks about your thoughts and experiences of Grinnell, especially as they relate to visions, strengths, and needs. t is a series of questions for anyone who lives, works in, and/or uses resources in Grinnell. You can take this survey yourself or get a group of people together to discuss it. he questions can be answered digitally or in print - paper copies and drop boxes are available at Saints Rest and Drake Library -  or may be printed off from the website.

The data collected from this survey will be used first to create a broad-based listing of all identified community needs, strengths, and visions, which will then be brought back to the public for prioritization, and later used to inform the creation of action planning groups on the topics prioritized.

It is crucial that people take the survey and have their voices heard in this process. e want to hear from everyone and avoid leaving any voices or opinions out because your individual input counts!

Get involved, learn more:

BABG puts out a regular update newsletter, if you would like to subscribe to the listserv, please visit the website to sign up.  If you would like to learn more about the project or get involved, please email Project Coordinator Bel Kugel at bel@buildabettergrinnell.org

By gathering people together, asking questions, and thinking about our community’s needs, we can collectively work to make Grinnell an even better place to live, work, and play.

Take a look at our upcoming activities and new items that are listed on the virtual backpack!
