Superintendent's Weekly Update
Weekly Update: February 21, 2020
Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:
Happy Friday! I would like to thank the Grinnell-Newburg School District staff for completing the recent survey about meeting your communication needs, as well as ways that I can further support you in your role. We had quite a response and I greatly appreciate it! I will be sending out communications to staff bi-monthly and will share the results of the survey at the upcoming listening tour meetings.
Other items that will be shared at the listening sessions will include substitute teachers (a look at our data), mental health of students, tech director interviewing and next steps, and any other items that you would like for me to follow up on. If you have any questions that you would like for me to have ready for your school’s listening event, please feel free to email me.
SIAC Meeting is Wednesday, February 26 at 5:00 in High School Library:
The topic for this SIAC meeting is to review the Initiative on Relationships. We are looking for your feedback on student experiences and what we can do to assist students to get connected! We look forward to our discussion.

Based on the famous Charles Addams cartoons in The New Yorker magazine, the Addams family lives in a mansion in Central Park not seen by most people. The inhabitants are decidedly “not normal,” and include the living, the dead, and the undecided. The play begins with an introduction to the family then continues with the story of the eighteen-year-old daughter who has fallen in love with a young man that comes from a “normal” mid-west family, and how the families interact. The action takes place in and around the Addams Mansion.
The High School & Middle School art show opened Feb 13 and will run through the closing reception on March 12 at the downtown Stewart Gallery.
Two Tigers advance in the State Tournament, Brock Beck will wrestle for the Champion spot and Kam Steveson will wrestle for third. Good Luck Tigers!
Highlights from Hoops for Hope:
The GMS library and the Drake Community Library teamed together again to hold an All Iowa Reads book club at GMS.
Students who joined the club got a free copy of the book, courtesy of the Friends of DCL, and we met over the lunch hour on separate days to discuss the books. The choices this year were a graphic novel memoir Hey Kiddo by Jarett Krosoczka and The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson.
Grinnell Preschool Family Event March 1 from 3:00 to 5:00.
Above & Beyond Recognitions:
We have so many wonderful people who make our school and community better. Nominations can be submitted for students, staff, or community members who have gone above and beyond to support our students. Please send a nomination email to aboveandbeyond@grinnell-k12.
