Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is "the nation's longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens." Grinnell High School students have submitted 26 art and writing pieces in the regional competition. They will compete against about 4500 entries from states as far as Ohio and Kansas. The 10 submissions for writing and 16 art submissions for art are listed below. Regional winners will be announced on January 29th.
Writing submissions: River Haenfler submitted “Adaptation, Empathy & Expanding Horizons” in the category of Personal Essay & Memoir, “An Earthling’s Regret” in the category of Poetry, and “Til Tempest Do Us Part” in the category of Novel; Lanie Kaup submitted “A Simpler Time” in the category of Poetry; Myles Manley submitted “Judgement (XX),” “The Star (XVII),” and “The Tower (XVI)” in the category of Poetry; Elliot Squier submitted “girl is” in the category of poetry; Peyton Stevenson submitted “Modern Feminism: A Step Forwards or Backwards?,” in the category of Critical Essay and “Velliane Greene – Eating Disorder Patient Prescribed Journal” in the category of short story.
Art submissions: Diane Boyd submitted “Heaven” in the category of Mixed Media and “Moth to a Flame” in the category of Painting; Arianna Burrell submitted “The Overlooked” in Ceramics & Glass; Tayla Fabor submitted “Solemn Cove” and “Treacherous Voyage” in the category of Painting; Mathew Glascoe submitted “Chicago Skyline” in the category of Digital Painting, Drawing & Collage and “Mountain City” in the category of Film & Animation; Bentley Gonzalez submitted “Monkey Strikes Back” in the category of Film & Animation; Myles Manley submitted “You’re Only Moving in Circles” in the category of Photography; Slane McCue submitted “Gender Inequality and Equality in the Home and Workplace” in the category of Ceramics & Glass; Lucy Skouson submitted “Observing the Glass Ceiling” in the category of Sculpture and “Overconsumption” in the category of Digital Painting, Drawing & Collage; Elliot Squier submitted “Femininity is Divinity” in the category of Drawing; Peyton Stevenson submitted “A Trip Upstairs,” “A Walk by the Lake,” and “Where Congressmen Work” in the category of Photography.
