Mission Statement
The Grinnell-Newburg transportation department's mission is to provide timely and the safest transportation of students and faculty that is possible, whether that be to and from school or on special activities.Under Iowa statute, all elementary students (K-8) who live more than two miles from their designated schools are entitled to free transportation to and from school. All high school students (9-12) who reside more than three miles from their school are entitled to free transportation to and from school. Our school board has modified that for safety reasons to neighborhood stops so that children will not have to cross the highways to get to their designated school.
The transportation department maintains a fleet of 19 buses, 3 Suburbans, 1 Traverse, 1 Chevy Van and 5 miscellaneous vehicles that include trailers and support vehicles. The Grinnell-Newburg school district's transportation department has a total of 12 regular route drivers, 2 special education drivers and 12 activity drivers. There are 10 regular bus routes and 1 special education bus route. We also provide services with a van to transport special education students to and from their home. Our regular route drivers transport anywhere from 750-800 students a day to their homes or neighborhood stop. In a district of our size that accumulates to around 115,000 route miles per year. At times during the year, some gravel roads may become unsafe and inaccessible for school buses to travel on. In the event that school is in session but not all roads are accessible, the district will implement a Hard Surface Pick Up Schedule for students.
