Weekly Update: March 6, 2020

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends,

It is Friday, and I am looking forward to seeing the GHS play this evening at 7:30 PM, as they present The Addams Family, A Musical Comedy.  If you miss this evening's show, you will have one more opportunity to see the play tomorrow evening! I am also looking forward to warmer weather for this weekend, and the feeling that Spring is just around the corner.

I hope that this weekly update finds you well as we continue to monitor Influenza, the Coronavirus and travel, and other illnesses that emerge during this time of the year. This update has some important information regarding the Coronavirus that was provided to us to disseminate to our families.

Coronavirus:  The news about this virus is widespread.   I asked our local hospital and our public health organization to review this letter prior to dissmentiating here for our families.   Please take the time to review this information. Please know that if your child is sick with fever or flu like symptoms, please keep them home.   Use the preventive measures as discussed in the letter. In the event that this virus becomes widespread in Grinnell, I will be sending a voice reach out to our families with our plan about school.   The Coronavirus letter can be found here.

We have also published this on our website.

The Board Meeting on March 11, 2020 will be at 5:00 PM so that members of our Board and I can attend the Chamber Event.

Preschool Update:  As you are aware, pre-school registration was held on March 1, 2020. This year, the district office will be running the lottery for placement.  Why a lottery? Pre-school is a public funded program for all kids in the community. As a public entity we can not pick and choose who can be in the program as some private schools can do. We need to ensure that all students of age have an opportunity to be in the program and that it is equitable.

TechTigers:

The high school robotics club, the TechTigers, are putting their final touches and testing on a robot to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition this spring.  They will participate in two Regional events. The first will be in Olathe, Kansas over spring break and the second will be a week later in Cedar Falls.

Partnerships are an essential part of this team, which includes Image First Signs.  They provided polycarbonate sheets that students have used to design components on CAD software and then cut out on the high school's CNC router.  It is an important part of our engineering design process.

On this past inservice day, there were still students putting in a full day of work, which included going over to Image First Signs to have some of their designs cut out of aluminum.

Based on the famous Charles Addams cartoons in The New Yorker magazine, the Addams family lives in a mansion in Central Park not seen by most people. The inhabitants are decidedly “not normal,” and include the living, the dead, and the undecided. The play begins with an introduction to the family then continues with the story of the eighteen-year-old daughter who has fallen in love with a young man that comes from a “normal” mid-west family, and how the families interact. The action takes place in and around the Addams Mansion.
