Weekly Update, May 5, 2017

Dear Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:

I can’t think of a better way than to provide you with a weekly update that exemplifies the hard work of our students and staff learning, exploring, and preparing for a transition.

This week we celebrated our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week.  I am grateful for all they do for our students.  Thank you to our families, PTO, community and staff for celebrating our teachers!

Clarification on summer work:
Each summer teachers will collaborate together to enhance curriculum, lessons, or align accelerated course work or other programs.  This is a common practice for our staff.   We are constantly reviewing and aligning curriculum, exploring resources, and perfecting our craft.  It is what teachers do!   Please know that there was confusion regarding the middle school “common core math alignment” that was published recently.    Please know that our math is aligned to common core math. Our summer work is to collaborate with 4th-7th grade math teachers to enhance the transition for students from the intermediate to the middle school.   Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding our summer work.

Grinnell-Newburg Students and Staff Highlights for the week!

Bailey Park:
Bailey Park 2nd graders went to visit Davis this week, in an opportunity to get them familiar with the building before transitioning there next year!

Fairview:
Fairview students had an engaging time with their Science Focus day this week.  Students were able to pet exotic animals from Blank Park Zoo, make milkweed seed balls, program robots, as well as learn about many other amazing and fun science topics.

GMS:
Students Prepare for GMS Science Fair
This week our Middle School students have been working on their Science Fair projects in preparation for the GMS Science Fair Night at Grinnell College on May 11 (5th and 7th Grade) and May 12 (6th and 8th Grade).  The judging will begin around 4:00 pm and the event should conclude around 6:30 pm.  We hope you can make it!
