Weekly Update: March 11, 2022

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:

Happy Friday before Spring Break begins! I would like to wish everyone a relaxing and fun week ahead. Enjoy your time with family and friends, and we will see you spring back to school on March 21, 2022.

We wish all GHS students participating in the Individual Event State Speech Contest the best this Saturday, March 12, 2022. Go Tigers!

Just a reminder to SPRING FORWARD this weekend! Set your clocks one hour ahead as we enter Daylight Savings Time.

Covid Dashboard Update:

The Dashboard will remain up on our website; however, we will only be reporting student absences at this time until the end of the year. We continue to receive updates from the County Department of Public Health; however, percentages for COVID are no longer tracked. Only cases were reported. If this changes, I will let you know.

Above & Beyond:

The Board recognized Kevin Hosbond and Jennie Flinspach for the Above & Beyond Award and their Large Group Speech Mime Students who recently won the Critic's Choice Award in Group Mime at the 2022 IHSSA All-State Speech contest on Saturday.

They also recognized Middle School administrative assistants Teresa Hawk, Laura Martin; Davis administrative assistant, Lori Walker, and Transportation staff member JD Barnes for their act of kindness in assisting families in exchanging iPads, so that students could complete their school work.

Finally, the Board Recognized Reagan Mackie, Jess Kite, and Valorie Larsson for stepping up to complete all of the assessments for our English Language Learner students! The help during a time of need was spectacular.

GMS Band Concert Highlights!

Last night the 8th-grade band was the first in the world to play a special piece of music, "Of Heroes and Honor by Randall D Standridge." This piece was truly special and written to give back to our band program.   This was a unique opportunity for students to premiere a piece of music.   This piece was commissioned in memory of Mr. VanArkel's father, who passed away in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. His father was a longtime firefighter and attended every concert.
