Weekly Update: January 24, 2020
Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:
I want to take the time to thank all of our families for their patience as we evaluated the weather for Grinnell students this morning. There are many factors that we consider when we call a late start or cancellation. The good news is that the day warmed up, roads are pretty clear, and there is little to no wind for the ride home. Have a wonderful weekend!
Parent/Teacher Conferences are next week:
Thursday, January 30 from 2:00-8:00 and Friday, January 31 from 8:00 - 12:00. This means there will be a 2 hour early dismissal January 30 and no school on January 31. Please check with your school for further details about signing up for these conferences.
Make Up Snow Day for Students and Staff:
We will make up the January 17, 2020 snow day on February 17, 2020 as indicated on our approved calendar! All students and staff will be in session on President’s Day, February 17th.
Sports Boosters Potato Bar:
The annual Band Boosters Potato Bar is tonight! Also, Jazz Night will be on tonight Friday, January 24 from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Middle School Jazz Band will perform at 5:15 and the High School Jazz Band will perform following the Middle School. We hope you will come support the Band Boosters at the Potato Bar while listening to the MS and HS Jazz Bands.
SILO: Free admission Educational Safety Event
Mon. Jan. 27th @ Hotel Grinnell @ 7pm
Grinnell Mutual and the Grinnell College Center for Prairie Studies to bring ‘SILO’ to Grinnell, Iowa
Grinnell Mutual and The Grinnell College Center for Prairie Studies are sponsoring a screening of SILO, a Hollywood film about grain-bin entrapment, at Hotel Grinnell on Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. This special event is part of SILO’s Community Screening Campaign focused on FFA education, supported by a generous grant from Grinnell Mutual.
SILO is being shown in agricultural communities across the country. It is the first-ever feature film to address the very real threat of grain entrapment. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of the film and farm safety led by film producer Sam Goldberg.
The School Board met this past week to adopt next year’s calendar 2020-2021. They also accepted a recommendation to have students attend school on February 17, 2020 (President’s Day) as a make up snow-day. We will be in session on February 17th for all students and staff. Please mark your calendar! Other approved items were the CultureALL agreement, Hometown Ticket contract, and Davis Elementary School provided an update about the awesome activities that teachers are students are doing!
Student Honor Anniversary Year of the 19th Amendment:
Mr. Mick and Mr. Warwick’s students created a great museum display celebrating the struggle for equality, women’s rights and the 100th Year Anniversary of the 19th Amendment! Way to go US History kids! Great work! Check it out! This display is in the hallway outside GHS gymnasium! Special thank you to Alicia Carradus for all of her help making this a great example of student work!
