Weekly Update: May 6, 2022
Dear Grinnell Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:
Happy Friday! Spring weather has not been the best for our outdoor activities; however, I believe next week we may finally see some relief. Listed below are the many upcoming events for next week. This quick “at a glance” will hopefully assist you in navigating through all of the activities to place on your calendar during a busy time of year.
It is with great sadness that I share the recent loss of former student Drew Gibson, Class of 2021, son of Dee Gibson (Fairview first grade teacher) and Rob Gibson (GMS Social Studies Teacher) this past week. Please keep the family in your thoughts during this difficult time. The Tiger Staff have been working together to support our colleagues through this challenging time.
We would also like to congratulate Dr. Anne Harris, Grinnell College’s 14th President, on her official inauguration ceremony that will take place this Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 10:30 am.
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
Please be sure to take a moment to thank your teachers for all that they do to support our students and families! Each and every day, our teachers find ways to help our students to learn and grow even during the most challenging times. Thank you, Teachers!
The Grinnell Middle School wrapped up its 2022 Teacher Appreciation Week celebration with a check presentation from its partner in education, Grinnell Mutual. A contribution of $2,500 to the Grinnell Newburg School Foundation’s mini-grant program honors the GMS staff and supports Grinnell-Newburg staff members’ educational projects not otherwise funded by the school district. Partners in Education committee members include (from left): Barb Baker, Grinnell Mutual; Jill Hulsing, GMS; Tammy Tibbitts, Grinnell Mutual; and Principal Clay Harrold, GMS.
Happy Nurses Day!
May 11, 2022, is Nurses Day! Thank you to Kim Weber and Katelin Ferguson for supporting our students every day! Your friendly and kind faces comfort our students when they are not feeling well! Thank you for taking such great care of them.
Happy School Lunch Heroes Day!
Today we also recognize our School Lunch Heroes! Our school lunch staff goes above and beyond to ensure that students are taken care of each day not only during the school year but throughout the summer months as well. Thank you for all that you do!

Class efforts Benefit MICA:
We held a food drive to benefit MICA and Jill Hollingsworth’s sixth-grade STRIVE group earned the most points during the week. The fifth grade brought in the most items as an entire grade. As a whole, we contributed a total of 878 pounds of food. Our Partner in Education, Grinnell Mutual, has agreed to match the pounds of food with a monetary donation, so our contribution is doubled! A HUGE THANKS to our fabulous partner for their continued support of the middle school and our community. MICA is very appreciative saying this came at an opportune time.
Culinary Arts Students are always cooking up goodness! This week they made special treats to appreciate Staff!
