Weekly Update: September 7, 2018

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends,

Happy Friday!   It has been a busy week for the Grinnell-Newburg students and staff.  It is our best hope that the weather turns a little less wet for the upcoming weekend. There is some important information below about tonight’s football game and events. Please be sure that you take a look.

Also, I would like to thank Miraco Company for their support and assistance yesterday for bus parking and additional parking they made available on such short notice as we scrambled to host the GHS cross country meet.  Ahrens Park was determined not usable due to the amount of water. There were 11 teams that participated in the event and they traveled from across the State to be here. I want to thank everyone for their patience as this large event was put together in less than 2 hours at the 4th avenue site.  We recognize that there was some frustration with communication and parking, however in the end, it was an amazing event for our athletes. The 4th avenue space worked out very well due to the size of the property.

School Bond information:

This Bond will enable the district to provide safe and secure entry ways for students, separate drop off and pick up areas, storm shelters, College and Career spaces, critical Heating and Cooling Updates, Plumbing, and electrical updates. It will also enable the district to house students and staff in learning environments that are ADA compliant and meet the needs of our gifted and special needs learners.  This past summer we have experienced several system failures due to aging systems. The plan, that will cost the average homeowner 64 cents a day, will enable the district to build a new PreK-5 building, completely gut and renovate the middle school, and renovate the high school. Please know that the district does not have dollars to fix the 42-48 million dollars worth of renovations in five buildings just to bring them up to code, without adding any educational learning spaces or longevity to the life of the school building.   The plan was designed based upon feedback from our many community engagements meetings, our new architect firm, administrators, teachers, and students. The final informational meeting will be held Monday, September 10 from 12:00-1:00 at the Drake Library.
