Weekly Update: September 28, 2018

Happy Friday! It is my best hope that this weekly update finds everyone well as we officially have kicked off the fall season.  Just a reminder there is no school for students on Monday, October 1, 2018. Teachers will be engaged in professional development.  This week has been a busy week as we finalized all of our state reports and finalize our Title 1 grant application. Families were invited to curriculum nights this week and feedback from these events have been extremely positive.   I want to thank our pre-K through 4th grade staff for offering your time to share our curriculum, activities, assessments, and reporting to our families. It was amazing to watch young students explain the routines and their activities during this event. Below are highlights from this week! I hope you enjoy this week’s update!

Board Update:

The Board officially re-organized at their meeting this past week.  Helen Redmond was selected as Board President, Meg Jones Bair was selected as the Vice President,  and Lisa Johnson will continue to serve as treasurer and secretary to the Board. The Board also selected their committees, attorney representative, financial institution and more.  The Board meeting dates have been set for the school year as well. 2018-2019 Board of Education Meeting dates can be found here.

October 17th Board Workshop:
The Board of Education will host a Board Workshop event beginning at 6:00 PM on October 17th in the Boardroom.   CMBA and Estes Construction will be available. This workshop is a Board workshop held in the public. Public comment will be welcomed during the public comment section on the agenda.  This is not the engagement sessions for the public as no decisions or planning for future facilities will happen during this workshop. Those sessions will be coming soon. The first step is for the Board  to review current needs, priorities and review our SAVE available dollars to address immediate needs. Community engagement sessions with the public will be held in late October or early November.

Community Engagement Sessions Regarding Facilities:

The district will engage in public dialogue and listening sessions with the public to identify possible solutions for our facilities at the end October, beginning of November. (Please watch for final dates coming to you next week).  This is the community’s opportunity to help us find a solution and to participate in discussions. It is my hope that these will be scheduled at the end of October and beginning of November and will be in the evening. We will also try to find a Saturday time to accommodate our families and community members in mid-November.

October is Bullying Prevention Month:

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. It’s a time when anti-bullying activities take place in schools and communities throughout the country. The Grinnell Community School District has planned some activities to promote Bullying Prevention Month and our Olweus Anti-Bullying Program.

STOMP Out Bullying™, the leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying organization for kids and teens, created Blue Shirt Day® World Day of Bullying Prevention™. Always observed on the first Monday of every October, this year, October 1st, they ask students, schools, parents and businesses to GO BLUE on that day by wearing a blue shirt. Use your voice and send a message that this is the day that bullying prevention is heard around the world. Change the Culture!

Since October 1st is a professional development day for the Grinnell Schools, we will observe GO BLUE on Wednesday, October 3rd. Please wear blue to promote bullying prevention.
