Weekly Update:  May 19, 2017

Today is the last official school day for the GHS graduating senior class.   I would like to wish them well as they continue on their journey through life.   It has been an amazing year for our senior class.  I am proud of their accomplishments and achievements in academics, athletics, and performances throughout the year.    I hope that they will cherish their memories as a Grinnell-Newburg student for many years to come.   Please continue to share your experiences and tell your amazing stories of your adventures as a student here in Grinnell:  #Wearegrinnell.

This week has been full of celebrations.   I hope you enjoy these few highlighted events from this past week.

Admin Team Meeting:
Our administrators had the opportunity to finalize a draft plan of our overarching professional development for the 2017-18 school year.   We will be inviting our PLC facilitators and coaches on June 12, from 9:00-2:00 pm, in order to collaborate on vision, mission and values.  We will also be spending time on vetting the draft professional development plan and finalizing our goals for the 2017-18 school year together.   We hope that our facilitators and coaches will be able to join us as they play an important leadership role.

Our administrators also participated in several learning activities with CMBA architects this past week that focused on teaching, learning and environments.   These activities enabled CMBA to learn more about Grinnell.   CMBA will be spending time in Grinnell to learn about our community, perform facility walkthroughs and observe our learning environments over the next few months.

National Police Appreciation Week: Bailey Park Celebrates our Officers
Bailey Park welcomed our police department and held a rousing celebration to thank them for all they do to keep us safe.  Students lined up in the hallway to give our officers high fives or cheer for them as they walked down the hallway.  Our students also presented a book to our officers that was compiled by each class.

Healthy Living Iowa Program:
This past week Fairview Elementary School was awarded $500.00 from Grinnell Mutual for their entry into “Go the Distance May” activities.   Each elementary school had the opportunity to enter and take on this challenge.    Congratulations Fairview for your participation and winning entry.

Retirement Parties
As the year comes to a close, I have had the opportunity to attend several of our retirement parties for our wonderful retirees.  It is evident that the bond between our teacher is strong.  I am grateful to each of our retirees for your years of service to our students.

All City Band Concert
The All City Band Concert was a wonderful evening of music, as all our music programs came together to celebrate and show off all the hard work they have done this year.  It was enjoyable to see all ages performing and enjoying music together.

High School Spring Concert- Friday May 12
This past Friday night the High School held their Spring Concert and honored seniors. It was another wonderful night of music. Program

Thespian Induction
I had the privilege of attending the Thespian Induction this week, and I continue to marvel at the aptitude of our students.  We are very fortunate to have such a thriving program.  Congratulations also to Elizabeth Hansen for building such a successful program, and good luck to you in your next season.

Online Registration Coming Soon!
Please be looking for an email coming soon, notifying you of when Registration for the 17-18 School Year will be open.  You may be thinking about Summer Break, but we are already planning for school to start next year!  The District is opening online registration early this year, but will still have a registration night on August 1st.  Please be checking your email regularly, throughout the summer, as the District continues to communicate need-to-know information about next year.

Summer Food Program Feeds Kids For Free

June 5th to August 4th, M-F, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
Children ages 1-18 may come to eat for free. Adults lunches are $3.75 (at Davis).

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about keeping children eating healthy while school is out.  Each year, the United States Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like Grinnell-Newburg Community School District to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer.  Please see the informational flier for more details and info about a lunch on Friday's at Willow Court.  There are no income requirements or registration.
