Weekly Update: December 13, 2019

Dear Grinnell Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families and Friends:

We are only one week away until we officially welcome winter break. One more week to go! This week has been filled with concerts, Tiger Sports, presentations, celebrations and much more. Our photos below highlight some of our events and news this week.

Please remember that next week is a full week of school with a regular dismissal time next Friday, December 20, 2019.

Our Board of Education completed their reorganization following the November election results, and have selected Helen Redmond as School Board President, Dustin Smith as Vice President, and Lisa Johnson as Secretary and Treasurer. The Board has identified committee representatives and delegates. We will post the complete committee list next week on our website under the Board’s page. The other document that you may want to take a look at is our State of the District report! This report highlights our enrollment, ethnicity, financial state, goals, and assessment measures. It is important to know that the state has implemented a new state assessment called ISASP. The data on our charts, for the 18-19 school year, represent new baseline data. We examine this data to review how students are performing against the Iowa Core Standards, but more importantly, the best use of this data is to identify gaps in our curriculum. It is important to remember that this one data point of many that we use to measure how our students are growing academically.

This week I had an opportunity to share our story regarding the ad hoc facilities committee progress with the Poweshiek Leadership Education group at BGM. Other events this week included the Grinnell College Presidential event, the regional planning committee with area superintendents that support our Career Technical Education programs, and many concerts and sporting events. It was a busy, yet fun week.

Good News to share!!!!  Congratulations to our middle school science teachers for being selected to present three different programs at the NSTA national conference in Boston this Spring. The presentation topics are:  “Hooked on Penomena”, “Authentic Texts: What are They and How Do I use Them in the Middle Grades?” and “Turn Your Gears: Every Student can Engineer!”  We are very proud of your hard work and dedication to our students and eagerness to share the good work at GMS! Great Job!

Concert Highlights:

Concert Season is one of my favorite times of the year! Especially to know that just 4 months ago many of our fifth grade students picked up an instrument for the very first time, and they performed complete pieces very well! It was a joy to listen to our students perform! Take a look at the calendar for next week! GHS will perform on Monday night!  Don’t miss it!

Fairview Update:

Fairveiw 2nd grade WIN group has been reading about Sled Dogs and their important job of delivering life saving medicine years ago. When the students learned that their teacher had a “sled dog” they begged her to bring it. So, after learning more about the dogs, and writing and presenting their persuasive letters to Mrs. Seney, their hard work paid off! Mrs. Seney gave the okay! Kinnick got to come visit school today is Ms. Tuttle’s room! The kids loved it!
