Weekly Update: September 21, 2018

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends,

Happy Fall!  The week began with summer heat and ended with a refreshing fall chill in the air.   Fall in Grinnell is my favorite time of the year. All of our students are back in full swing of the school routine, eagles are seen returning to the area, and spectacular fall colors paint the yards.  This week students and staff enjoyed many Homecoming School Spirit activities. These memories last a lifetime for students. It is wonderful to see our students connecting with staff, their school, and each other as they celebrate with Tiger Pride!  Our update highlights many of those activities.

This week’s highlights:

It was a busy week!  I met with the AmeriCorp Grant writing team to begin the process to support our summer learning program. I also had an opportunity to work with new superintendents across Iowa to share a variety of strategies to support principals and administrators. This session was sponsored by School Administrators of Iowa and was held in Des Moines. I am mentoring a new superintendent this school year and it has been a very rewarding experience.

Heading into Wednesday, I met with our GNEA leadership.  We meet monthly as a small team to work through any opportunities or other related topics to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our hard working staff.

On Thursday, the Iowa Valley Regional Collaborative met to plan the required CTE budget that falls under new legislation.  I currently chair this committee and our very own Kevin Seney is working with our regions’ school district teacher representatives on the new program renewal requirements.  The first curriculum to be renewed and approved for accreditation is Agriculture. Also, thank you Ashley Wolfe for your leadership through this process!

Homecoming activities this week: It has been a great week!   Tiger Pride rang clear throughout our community this week!  I want to thank all who helped to organize the many events at each of our schools.  Special thanks to our Chamber leader, Rachael Kinnick, for organizing the parade and coordinating this event with our local businesses.
