Weekly Update: June 8, 2018

Superintendent Dr. Janet Stutz

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Family and Friends,

Summer break has officially started! It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of the first week of summer break. This is a busy time at the district office as we prepare for the opening of the 2018-19 school year. During the summer our weekly updates will be brief and informational. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the upcoming school year. I will be available most of the summer, except June 14-22.

Middle School Traffic during summer school:
As you may be aware there is construction at the intersection of Garfield and East Street. Please know that we are hosting summer band lessons as well as summer school for many students. During this time it is crucial that we keep traffic flowing in one direction. We ask that parents who are dropping off students enter from Garfield and exit on to East street. Please remember the East street driveway near the activities entrance is for exiting only. Students are familiar with this traffic pattern. I know this may be inconvenient, however, safety for our students is a priority. We are asking for your assistance in this matter to keep our students safe.

Registration:
If you have not registered your student for the fall of 2018, please do this as soon as possible. Registration can be done through your parent portal, and typically takes 5-10 minutes. Families new to the district can find information and access the registration application by visiting the district website.

I would like to stress the importance of Kindergarten registration as we work to assemble class rosters and balance class sizes between our two lower-elementary buildings. If you have an incoming kindergartener, I ask that you please assist us by taking a few moments in the coming days to register your student.

Pagliai’s Donation:
I would like to thank Pagliai’s for their generous donation of $3,500 that will go toward non-fiction reading materials at Davis Elementary. Pagliai’s raised $3,000, and then donated an additional $500.00, in order to meet our goal to purchase these materials. This donation has completed our collection for the non-fiction resources that are needed at each of our K-8 schools. I would like to once again thank GNSF and Rotary who also assisted us in this effort.

Summer Learning Is Cool For Kids:
The SLICK program begins Monday for students in grades K-4 at Davis Elementary, for students who have registered. We are grateful for the assistance that our AmeriCorps Team will provide this summer. Today the AmeriCorps Staff completed their final day of training. We are looking forward to an amazing summer. I want to thank all of our staff who worked together to gather several boxes of books for students to have during the summer program.
