Weekly Update: May 10, 2019
I hope that this weekly update finds everyone well! It is Friday and the Grinnell-Newburg School District has some wonderful news to share with our community this week. I hope you enjoy this update! In just four short weeks, we will be closing out our school year for summer. I know that it may not quite feel like Spring, but summer will be here before you know it. I am wishing everyone a wonderful Mother’s Day Weekend!
Celebrate Iowa School Board Superheroes this May!
The Iowa Association of School Boards invites communities to celebrate and thank their local school board superheroes during the month of May. This year’s theme, “Superheroes for Public Education”, pays tribute to the incredible work of these unpaid volunteers and the significant impact they have on Iowa Public Education. More than 2000 School Board members across Iowa volunteer countless hours on board work each month. Thank you Stephen Sieck, Barbara Brown, Meg Jones Bair, Helen Redmond, Dustin Smith, Laurel Tuggle Lacina, and Emily Guenther for being Superheroes for our students.
Bailey Park and Davis Awarded PLTW Distinguished School:
A representative from Project Lead the Way attended the Board meeting this week to recognize two of our elementary schools. We are among 426 schools across the country to earn this award. There were 17 schools in Iowa who also received the recognition, however only 4 PLTW Launch (Elementary) schools earned this designation in Iowa... and two of them are from Grinnell!! Congratulations!
Matthew Cunningham - 1st Team Academic All-State 2019
Matthew was recognized by the Board for this spectacular achievement.
Above & Beyond recipient:
We recognized two recipients for the Above and Beyond award. Congratulations to Mindy Kostow, assistant tech director. She was recognized by the building principals. Not pictured: Steve Langerud was recognized for the time and commitment that he gave to our district by facilitating the Listening Tours held in December and January.
National Board Certification:
This past week the Board was presented with re-visiting the National Board Certification opportunity for teachers. If you are interested in participating in this activity, please contact Malissa Juni or April Gosselink. I am working with them to organize a cohort who will submit an application in January of 2020.

Diversity Alliance visits our littlest learners at Fairview:
The Grinnell High School Diversity Alliance visited our littlest learners to talk about kindness and acceptance for all. The students worked together to determine what we can do at Fairview to make it a more inclusive school for everyone who walks through our doors. If you are at Fairview, look for posters with ideas from our students.
Bike Helmets for 3rd graders:
Last Friday, our 3rd graders were lucky enough to be fitted for bike helmets by our community partners. It is an awesome deal that 3rd graders in our County get free bike helmets to keep them safe while riding.
