Weekly Update: November 9, 2018

Dear Grinnell Newburg Board of Education, Families, Staff and Friends:

The snow has arrived and along with it chilly winds. Happy Friday!  This weekly update will highlight some of our events over this past week. Unplugged night this past week generated lots of fun with family and friends doing various activities. If you have photos from this event, please share them with us!

I would especially like to thank our community members, staff, Board and administrators who attended the planning session last night. Thank you for your participation in this event.  Please know that we will host the same session tomorrow from 10:00-12:00 PM at Grinnell Middle School. We would kindly ask that you participate in only one session in order to gather a variety of ideas for how we move forward with engaging our community from scratch, toward a new facility plan.  I have received wonderful feedback on the format, the active participation, and community members working together to collect ideas.

Emergency Test Message:
Today at 4:15 PM or shortly after, you will receive an emergency test message.  You should get a voice reach, an email and a text. If you do not receive all three, please check your infinite campus information for accuracy.  If you have any questions, please contact your school office or the district office for assistance.

Community Planning Sessions:  One more tomorrow. Please Join us!
November 10, 2018:  10-12 AM at Grinnell Middle School

We would like to invite the Grinnell Community to attend one of two focus group meetings in which the goal is to plan for future listening tours and community engagements.  Last night’s session went very well, so I hope you can join us. These planning meetings are to generate ideas on how to collect information from our public regarding school facilities and plans.  We envision these meetings as a discussion with our public to identify the following: dates we should host the engagement meetings, process to collect ideas from our public about a facility plan, identify current information that might be helpful to our community to share during the listening sessions, and ideas on how to bring a variety of stakeholders to future listening tours and engagement activities.

If you are unable to attend these community planning sessions but would like to provide input please visit this website Community Planning Process Form. Please check out our Facebook, Twitter, and our district website https://www.grinnell-k12.org/ to stay in tune to our facility planning and future engagement sessions.

Poweshiek Leadership Program:

This week I was invited to speak to the Poweshiek Leadership Program to highlight our Grinnell-Newburg School District’s current initiatives. Joining me to share about their school districts were the superintendents from BGM and Montezuma.  Every year community members apply for this leadership program to develop their leadership skills and learn more about Poweshiek. This is a wonderful program for community members.

CEC at the Stew:

If you have not checked out the Stew and program offerings located on Broad street in Grinnell, I highly suggest you do!  What an amazing place to learn and create. The Community Education Council group met this past week at the Stew to tour the space and learn about program offerings and equipment.  Tom Lacina shared highlights of the work and the efforts to foster many creative experiences for our community.
