Weekly Update: November 20, 2018

Dear Board of Education, Families, Staff and Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving!  It is my best hope that you enjoy time with family and friends during this upcoming short break.   Thank you for taking the time to check in and review this weekly update. There are many highlights each week that we include to celebrate our students and staff, and to inform you of upcoming events.   This week, please enjoy Alex Smith’s animated history segment that reflects the Great Depression.

Just a reminder:
No School: November 21, 22, 23 due to Fall Break.

Board Facility Workshop:

The Board will host a meeting on November 28th at 6:00 PM in the Board room at GHS to discuss next steps to move forward to engage community members in sharing ideas about a facility plan. Following this session with the Board, please watch for dates and times to participate in providing feedback to the district as we start from scratch to develop a plan.

The SIAC Meeting has been cancelled on November 28th due to scheduling conflicts. Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date.

Lesson from the Classroom Highlight:  Kent Mick’s Freshman History Class

Alex Smith Video

Alex Smith Video

Alex created an animated reflection video of the Great Depression from an inspirational Poem written by:  Jay Gorney in 1932. Alex used a variation of music in the background that was composed by Woody Guthrie. Alex chose Guthrie because of his work tied to the Great Depression too.  Alex commented, “that this lesson provided me with a better understanding of the emotions felt by many during this era”.

This piece is one example of how students explore literature, coupled with music, and art from an era that enables a student to find a connection to history.  This exploration about the Great Depression enables the student to dive deep into the concept that results in a level of understanding that is much more complex than just reading a text.  Back in my day, we would read about the Great Depression and other points in history, however I may have never really understood the impact on the lives of those who lived it as Alex has expressed here in this animation.   Many students completed this activity! Thank you Mr. Mick for sharing them with me!
