Weekly Update: August 6, 2021

Dear Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education, Staff, Families, and Friends:

Happy Friday!  This week we ended our summer SLICK and enrichment program for students.   It was a wonderful summer for our students. This year we also implemented a Kindergarten Camp in which students had an opportunity to see their classroom and learn the routines for how to do school!   We hope all of you enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Gearing up for the new year has been quite busy.  This week, a team of teachers, counselors, and administrators met to participate in the social and emotional learning initiative training. Researchers and educators agree that social and emotional learning can be modeled, taught, and practiced to enhance student learning outcomes, build relationships, and enhance lifelong skills (CASEL.org).  We look forward to creating learning experiences for our students built upon the five competencies that will benefit our students throughout their lifelong journey.

There is quite a bit of important information in this update! Please be sure to carefully review so that you are all set for the upcoming year.

Families who need additional financial assistance for registration and other school-related fees should complete a free and reduced-price application form. If your student(s) qualified for direct certification you will be getting a letter in the mail with a paper waiver to return to the school.

COVID update:

The Department of Education has come out with guidelines for COVID-19. (see link) School Update Fall 2021.pdf

We encourage anyone of age to be vaccinated, follow the CDC guidelines. We will continue to keep our protocols for cleaning, hand washing, encouraging outside activities as much as possible, and reminding people to stay home if they are ill or have developed symptoms.  A question about busing and masks has come up over the last few days. A federal executive order remains in place that has been interpreted to require masking on school transportation and we strongly encourage students to follow the CDC guidelines.

Running Camp hosted by GHS Cross Country 8/9 to 8/11 from 6 pm to 7 pm at Ahrens Park Big Hill Athletes will be responsible for bringing their own water bottle. Contact Coach Skillern with any questions, sean.skilleren@grinnell-k12.org **A souvenir water bottle will be included in the cost** Go Tigers!
