Weekly Update: April 12, 2019

Dr. Stutz

Weekly Update: April 12, 2019

Happy Friday! This week has been filled with music and celebration! I want to thank all of our coaches, sponsors and families who joined us to recognize students that have participated in a State Level competition since the fall of 2018!  What a crew! Also this week we welcomed Dr. William Soesbe who joined Kelsi Walter and me to present on section 504 during a SIAC meeting. You can see our presentation here Section 504 Presentation.  If you have any questions regarding section 504 please contact your child’s teacher, counselor or building principal. You are always welcome to reach out to me with questions regarding the process, the law, or procedures related to 504.

Congratulations to our Davis and Bailey Park students on their excellent performances this week. We have some pictures below that highlight these events. Thank you to Barb Van Ersvelde and Molly Loftin, our music staff, as well as to all of the teachers at each school for preparing our students for these shows! They were spectacular!

The Board of Education approved and awarded the bids for our summer work at various schools to remedy masonry work, boiler replacements, roofing, and electrical. The administration will be meeting this Monday to review the schedule for the summer with Estes Construction.

ISASP:

Thank you parents for encouraging your student to eat a healthy breakfast, get plenty of rests and come prepared for testing.   The testing sessions have gone rather smoothly. We had a few glitches but were able to work through them rather quickly.

Apple Professional Work this week:

Our teachers routinely work to improve learning in their classrooms.  Several K-2 teachers at Bailey Park and Fairview Elementary Schools collaborated this week to create some new technology-rich lessons with the assistance from our Apple Trainer and our Instructional Technology Coach Bill Gruman.

First grade students conducted a survey, graphically displayed their data,  and identified conclusions with the Keynote app, or they learned about characteristics of geometric shapes creating custom emojis using Keynote.

Kindergarten students created videos in the Clips App or Keynote using emojis to identify and describe weather patterns.

Students in second grade identified and researched a global problem, using bar graphs, and proposed possible solutions with research, custom graphics, and animations using a template in Keynote.

Student projects were saved for future use or exported to their digital portfolios in the application Seesaw.

Take the survey for the Community Internet Option if you live in Grinnell It is still open:

The survey can be accessed here: mahaska.org/grinnell.

The Grinnell Chamber of Commerce & City of Grinnell were recently approached by Mahaska Communications Group (MCG), a division of Musco Lighting in Oskaloosa, to explore the possibility of running fiber to the Grinnell community. After several initial conversations to further explore this option, this survey is being distributed to better understand the community need for the service. The Chamber has asked the District for help in reaching this survey to as many community members as possible. Thanks for your help!
